Review #1 - January 2011

I started to look back on the year that passed and found out that there's way way way to many things to write about than what could possibly fit in just one blog post. Therefor, we will go through 2011 month by month, starting with January of course.

 

The very first blog post ever on this blog said "Hi and welcome to my journey", kind of. The picture above is from my notebook, a page listing important stuff to do - like "Start cloocollection.blogspot.com" and "Make a jaunty view over the pieces of the collection".
The other one simply says "Write a great fucking budget". Sort of like a note to self.
At this point I was working towards getting the allowance for new businesses, so that's why the budget part was so important.

So, the work was on and there was A LOT to do. It was high time to get going with the samples of the collection, and of course deciding which pieces it should include. The overview on the picture above (to the left) was really helpful to keep a good look over what pieces should have what fabric and so on. At the same time I was struggling to get some of the pieces together and look in reality as they were looking in my head..

I was also making the labels for the brand - and remaking them. Very glad that I made that decision.

I was working at home - at my tiny tiny "office" that allowed me to close the door behind me and hide from my daughter, who was then five months old and screamed as soon as she saw me because she then realized that I wasn't holding her. Made visits to the bathroom or kitchen really hard.

Finally the collection started to take shape, and the samples look like they were supposed to.

The Cloo Collection Autumn

This autumn has been amazing, and even though I'm having my last day at the office before christmas, I will not take full vacation from the blog. There's so many things that's happend this year and I want to compile them and give you reviews. So, you will hear from me.

Being the last day and all, the office is a total mess with paperwork, orders to send and things to organize. I would lie if I said that I don't love it. Offices should always be messy! It's a sign of many things being in the making.

And, of course, today we play christmas carols all day long. To get in the right mood!

Den här hösten har varit fantastisk, och även om jag idag jobbar sista dagen på kontoret innan jul så kommer jag inte att ta semester från bloggen. Det har hänt så otroligt mycket under året och jag vill sammanställa allt och ge er lite återblickar. Så, helt tyst kommer det inte att bli. :)


Eftersom det är sista dagen är kontoret en röra av pappersarbete, beställningar som ska skickas och grejer som ska organiseras. Jag skulle ljuga om jag sa att jag inte älskar det - kontor ska vara röriga! Det är ett tecken på att många saker är i rullning. 


Och självklart går julsångerna på högsta volym hela dagen. Allt för att komma i rätt stämning!

My precious baby girl

I was looking through the pictures from the Cloo Collection photo shoot in october and found this. This is my daughter, my baby, my precious.

Totally there were nine kids at the photo shoot, all of them at the age of one and all of them smiling, happy and playing around. Ellen was like a sticker attached to me, staring grumply at the other kids the whole day and when I put her down on the floor to be photographed she was n o t pleased.

Look at that grumpy face. I love her more than life itself.

Jag tittade igenom bilderna från Cloo Collections fotosession i Oktober och hittade den här. Det här är min dotter, min älskade vackra ljuvliga ängel.
Det var totalt nio barn på fotograferingen, alla i ettårsåldern och alla var glada, nyfikna och lekte runt. Ellen var som ett klistermärke på mig hela dagen, surt stirrandes på de andra barnen, och när jag satte ner henne på golvet för att bli fotograferad blev hon.. missnöjd.
Titta på det buttra ansiktet. Kan man älska någon så mycket?

How about a cristmas gift?

What do you say about a last-weekend-before-christmas-sale at the Cloo Collection web shop?

This weekend is the last chance to shop before Cloo goes on holiday vacation, and the last orders will be sent on monday. Therefore I'm thinking about giving you guys a little christmas gift - how about 20% in the entire shop from friday 09.00 (9 am) to sunday 22.00 (10 pm)?

Denmark, here we come!

Today I'm shipping a load of clothes to a web shop in Denmark. I love this! Denmark is such a huge country for designed kids clothes and it feels like such a great compliment to get asked by a danish shop to sell my clothes. Hopefully it will spread there.

Today is also the day of the tax declaration, so I'm stuck with numbers at the office.
A few hours ago I got a call from my kids daycare centre, saying that my youngest child just threw up. Not the best news to get this busy week, but luckily their father could pick them up. Tomorrow though, I get to stay home and - instead of our first  "Lucia" celebration at the daycare centre - we will probably have to celebrate at home.

Idag ska jag skicka iväg kläder till en webshop i Danmark! Vårt grannland är överlägsna när det kommer till designade barnkläder och jag tar det som en enorm komplimang att en dansk butik vill sälja mina kläder. Förhoppningsvis kan det spridas där!


Idag är det skattedeklarationsdag, så jag sitter fast på kontoret i siffror och papper. Tidigare fick jag ett telefonsamtal från barnens dagis om att minstingen just kräkts. Inte de bästa av nyheter en fullspäckad vecka som den här, men lyckligtvis kunde deras pappa hämta upp dem idag. Imorgon får jag dock - istället för att gå och se det efterlängtade första luciafirandet på dagis - stanna hemma och fira.

Retailer nr #4 - UNI Barnkläder, Stockholm

I asked my Stockholm based friends a couple of weeks ago if there was any stores in the capitol city that they thought I should contact about selling Cloo Collection. A name that came up more than once was UNI, that runs two stores in Stockholm city and a web shop. UNI focusses on gender neutral and organic kids wear - and what store could be more perfect for Cloo?

After meeting with them and presenting the brand, they decided to take in parts of the collection. If you are in Stockholm, I would strongly recommend you to visit one of their stores, the one on Åsögatan 130 at "Söder" or the one on Odengatan 102, next to "Vasaparken".

Jag frågade mina Stockholmsbaserade vänner för några veckor sedan om vilka butiker i huvudstan som de tyckte jag skulle kontakta för att visa upp Cloo Collection. Ett namn som kom upp flera gånger var UNI som driver två butiker i Stockholms innerstad och en webshop. UNI fokuserar på könsneutrala, ekologiska barnkläder - vilken butik kunde vara mer perfekt för Cloo?


Efter ett möte med dem och en presentation av märket bestämde de sig för att ta in en del av kollektionen. Om du är i Stockholm rekommenderar jag starkt ett besök i någon av deras butiker, på Åsögatan 130 på Söder eller Odengatan 102 vid Vasaparken.

special december

It's been a few days since the first of December, but now I remembered that this month is kind of special to me. This time last year - or the first of December 2010 to be exact - I had my first day of unemployment. Since my last employer decided to fire all of his empoyees during my parental leave, I had no job to go back to and despite all the not so fun paperwork and arguments about vacation salary and stuff, I was actually really happy about that. It gave me a chance to really get going with my business plans.

So, the first of December, I headed down to the employment office (in swedish called Arbetsförmedlingen) and waited in line. After about two weeks I got a meeting with "my" administrator and when I told her that I wanted to start my own business and apply for an allowance, she looked at me and she snorted.

A couple of months later I got the allowance, after some serious banging my head against the wall and struggling with my business plan, budgets and calculations. That story is a long one to tell, but those of you who has read this blog from the start in Januari this year knows how extreme it was.

So, December is special to me and to Cloo Collection. Even though there are hundreds of "first times" and their anniversaries to celebrate when you start your own business, tonight I celebrate December. Because that's when Cloo started to become something more than just a diffuse future dream.

Det har gått några dagar in på december, men nu kom jag ihåg att den här månaden är ganska speciell för mig. Vid den här tiden förra året - eller första december 2010 för att vara exakt - hade jag min första arbetslösa dag. Eftersom min tidigare arbetsgivare tagit beslutet att säga upp alla sina anställda under tiden jag var föräldraledig hade jag inget jobb att komma tillbaka till, och trots allt jobb med papper och bråk om semesterersättning och annat som det förde med sig, så måste jag säga att jag var väldigt glad för det. Det gav mig chansen att på riktigt komma igång med planerna för mitt eget företag.


Så, den första december var jag på plats på Arbetsförmedlingen och ställde mig i kö. Efter två veckor ungefär fick jag ett möte med "min" handläggare och när jag berättade för henne att jag ville starta eget och söka det sk. "Starta Eget Stödet", tittade hon upp från sina papper - synade mig - och fnös.


Några månader senare fick jag det där bidraget, efter en lång process av huvudet i väggen dunkande och slit med min affärsplan, budgetar och beräkningar. Ni som följt den här bloggen sedan starten i januari i år vet hur extremt utdraget det var, för er andra kanske jag sammanfattar den storyn någon dag.


Så, december är speciell för mig och för Cloo Collection. Även om det finns hundratals "första gången" och årsdagar att fira när man startar eget så firar jag december här ikväll. För det var då Cloo började bli något annat än bara en diffus framtidsdröm.

I'ts bad to do calculations on an empty stomach.

Yesterday afternoon I sat down to look at my calculations. I ended up recalculating for some reason - and discovered some BAD news.
In complete panic, I called my boyfriend crying something like "It's a disaster! I'm going down! This is so bad, it's a disaster!"

A million thoughts ran through my head. Was this the end of my company? How was I to fix this?

I went to pick up the kids from daycare, still in panic, texting my boyfriend all these different panic messages.

Then we came home, got something to eat, I looked at the numbers and calculations again and... What? What is this? What was I thinking? Hahahaha..

Well. The conclusion is, I'm not going down and I don't have to give up the company. I just can not do numbers with no food in my blood system.

Igår eftermiddag satte jag mig och tittade igenom mina beräkningar för företaget. Jag började räkna om lite på måfå och upptäckte d å l i g a nyheter. Ringde min pojkvän i panik, gråtandes något i stil med "Det är katastof! Jag går back! Det här är så dåligt, det är katastrof!"
En miljon tankar snurrade runt i huvudet. Var detta slutet? Hur skulle jag fixa det här?
Gick för att hämta barnen på dagis, fortfarande i total panik, och skickade en hel drös med olika skräck-sms till min pojkvän. 
Sen kom vi hem, fick lite mat i oss, jag tittade på beräkningarna igen och.. Va? Vad fasen..? Hur tänkte jag här egentligen? Hahaha..


Japp. Slutsatsen är: Jag går inte back. Jag behöver inte lägga ner företaget. Jag kan bara inte hantera siffror utan mat i systemet. 

About sizes

The most common comment I get about the collection is: "Isn't there bigger sizes? My son is too big!"

I have made the decision to start with the small sizes for a number of reasons. First of all, to keep the production simple. Cloo is still a small brand and multiple sizes would mean that I would have had to produce just a few of every size. Second, I think it's fun to be a little exclusive. For now, at least, Cloo Collection is a brand for small kids.

What I have thought about, on the other hand, is that the pieces is going to be able to use for a long time. So what could make me more happy than getting these pictures from gifted blogger Emma. Her son is normally a size 104 but fits perfectly in to The Badger Suit, in size 86/92 - because of it's long sleeve and leg wristlets.

Den vanligaste kommentaren jag får på min kollektion är: "Finns det inte större storlekar? Min son är för stor!"
Beslutet att jobba med små storlekar har flera anledningar. Först och främst är det för att hålla produktionen enkel. Cloo är fortfarande ett litet (men växande) märke och hade jag velat producera ett tiotal olika storlekar, som de flesta barnklädesmärken faktiskt gör, hade det inneburit att jag endast kunnat beställa ett litet antal av varje. För det andra: Jag tycker att det är kul att märket är lite exklusivt. Cloo är än så länge ett märke för små barn.
Något som har varit viktigt för mig dock, är att plaggen ska kunna användas länge, och inget kunde gjort mig gladare än att få de här fina bilderna av bloggaren Emma. Hennes son har i vanliga fall storlek 104, men kunde utan problem leka runt i en Badger Suit i storlek 86/92 tack vara de långa muddarna i ärm- och benslut.

A Cloo Collection Monday

New week and new appointments! The exhibition sale last friday went great, It's a little sad that the exhibition is over, but all the pieces sold out and I'm so pleased.

Now, I'm going to decorate the office with all the pictures. :)

I've known for a week or so, but finally it's official - Babyshop.se is one of Sweden's biggest web shops for kids clothes and has taken Cloo under their wings. This is huge and I'm so happy to have them on board.
